How to: Create a Temporary Contract

Learn how to make a contract temporary with a start- and end date.

Updated over a month ago

A temporary contract is pretty much what it sounds like - a contract valid only for a specified period of time. The employee's previous contract will automatically reactivate when the end date of the temporary contract has passed. Learn everything about temporary contracts, and how to create them, in this article.

When do we use temporary contracts?

A typical scenario where it would make sense to have a temporary contract could be when e.g. a sales assistant that is usually working 10H/week, is expected to work 25H/week during the summer when there is a lot of traffic in the store. When peak season is over, the sales assistant should go back to his/her original contract, where the hours per week equals 10 again. When using a temporary contract, this is all possible.

When the temporary contract has been fulfilled, the system will automatically reactivate the user's previous contract. This means that you don't have to spend time and effort creating a new contract with all the previous details when the temporary contract has ended. The system handles that process automatically for you.

With that in mind, let's go ahead and learn how to create a temporary contract.

How to make a temporary contract

1. Head over to the user's contracts tab, and click Create Contract.

2. Add the start date. Notice that the active contract automatically gets an end date, because it will not be valid during the temporary contract.

3. Click +Make temporary, and fill in the end date. At this point, you should see these three changes in the user's contracts:
- the active contract has an end date,
- the new contract has both a start- and end date,
- after the end date of the new contract, the previous contract will reactivate.

Click Fill details, when you are ready.

4. Add the details for the temporary contract, and press Create contract.

5. A green banner will inform you that the contract has successfully been created 🎉 You can now either Close the contract or continue the process by Adding documents. If you'd like to learn more about adding documents to a contract, check out this article 🙌

Solution

When I press Create contract, I don't have the option to press +Make temporary?

The user needs an existing contract, for the system to be able to create a temporary contract. If the user's only contract is going to be temporary, we recommend creating a regular contract and set a termination date instead. Read more about setting a termination date here.
